Catching up …
October 2nd, 2009
Hi folks – again, it’s been a while since I’ve posted but the reasons are slightly different than last time. Although I have to say that I am still suffering slightly from the effects of the “lurgi” that I contracted a couple of weeks ago, I’m glad to say that I am getting stronger every day. And thanks to all those that sent their good wishes.
But it’s frustrating when something like an illness or an unforeseen emergency sets you back. Personally, I get this feeling of loss because of the time that has passed in which I could have been productive. So I have been working hard to try to catch-up. But that can be counter-productive too.
I was talking to a friend about this and he chided me for my impatience. He reminded me that we all build up momentum in whatever we do and that when we take a break (whether it’s enforced or voluntary), it’s unrealistic to expect that you’re going to be able to go back at full speed straightaway.
He told me that it’s like an athlete returning from injury. OK, they may be the Olympic champion, or the world record holder, but when they get back on the track, they aren’t expected to go breaking records straight away. An athlete’s fitness is built up over many months, sometimes years. After returning, they need to build up their stamina and endurance without going too hard otherwise they can just break down again with the old injury, or maybe something worse.
That may be an extreme example, but he figured that the same thinking applies to regular folks like us in our own walks of life. And I think that he’s right.
Anyway, as I have got back in to the swing of things, I have been working on a couple of interesting ideas that I am hoping to roll out in the near future. So watch this space !

Glad to hear that you’re feeling better!
Cheers,

Hey Rog,
Don’t beat yourself up buddy – after all, we’re only human.
Everyone – I mean everyone, have good spells and not so good spells. I think it might have something to do with biorhythms or something.
But seriously, as long as you recognise whats happening and then do something about it – that’s all you should expect.
Hang loose,
Andrew.
Hey Roger,
What a great post, although I am really sorry to hear about your illness. You have provided a wonderful analogy…IT IS SO TRUE! But, like you, I have a bit of a patience problem & I’m afraid that I would expect to get things back on track in an unrealistic amount of time also. The whole time you are working, you are thinking about what you need to catch up on, and it is a bit self- defeating, I’m afraid. I continue to learn little lessons throughout my life, and USUALLY they prove to be quite valuable for future situations, although WHILE I’m learning them, the value is not always apparent.
I’m so glad to see that you are a part of Rob’s class, Roger-he is truly one of the good guys, isn’t he?
I wish you much success-take care!
